LIRA, UGANDA<\/strong> \u2013 In the communities of Northern Uganda, where the echoes of past conflict are still felt by the younger generation, a football pitch is more than just a place to play\u2014it is a classroom, a sanctuary, and a space for transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Divine Agency for Integrated Development (DivineAid), we are proud to continue our innovative “WASH Soccer”<\/strong> model. This unique program uses the universal language of football to drive post-conflict healing and engage youth in the vital mission of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Football for Healing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For many young people in our target communities, the legacy of conflict has left deep scars. The “WASH Soccer” model provides a structured, safe environment where youth can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Build Social Cohesion:<\/strong> Teamwork on the pitch breaks down barriers and fosters reconciliation among peers from different backgrounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Promote Mental Well-being:<\/strong> Sports serve as a powerful tool for trauma recovery, helping participants build resilience, discipline, and a sense of belonging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Reclaim Childhood:<\/strong> In areas where conflict once disrupted daily life, these tournaments offer a joyful space for youth to simply be kids again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Scoring Goals for Hygiene<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The “WASH” in WASH Soccer is just as important as the sport. We use the excitement of the game to deliver life-saving information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Halftime Lessons:<\/strong> Coaches and DivineAid staff use breaks in play to conduct hygiene demonstrations, such as proper handwashing techniques and the importance of using safe water sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tournament Requirements:<\/strong> Participation often involves community service projects, such as cleaning up local water points or participating in tree-planting drives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Youth Ambassadors:<\/strong> The captains and players become “WASH Champions” in their own villages, leading by example and encouraging their families to adopt healthy sanitation habits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      “We believe that youth are not just the future; they are the leaders of today,” says a DivineAid Youth Coordinator. “By combining soccer with WASH education, we are tackling two things at once: we are healing the heart and protecting the body. That is how we keep Community Hope Alive<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      As we expand our programs under our 10-year strategic plan, the WASH Soccer model remains a cornerstone of our commitment to inclusive development. It ensures that the most energetic members of our community are at the forefront of building a healthier, more peaceful Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
